The ark of the covenant was the heart of the tabernacle—it represented the very presence of God. Only the high priest could come before the ark and he could only do this once a year. He would approach the ark with blood from the animal sacrifice and offer the blood as atonement for his sins and the people’s sins (see Heb. 9:7).

Sin separates man from God. But today, because Jesus’ blood has made atonement for our sins once and for all, there is no more separation between God and us. In fact, He no longer dwells in an inaccessible holy place...He dwells in us! Because the Lord is always with us, we never have to go through life alone!

The Menorah was a lampstand with seven branches—three on each side of the center shaft. All the lamps on the branches were made to face the center shaft (see Num. 8:1–3).

The menorah gives us a picture of Jesus at the center of our lives. As we live for His glory, shining the light that He first gave us back to Him, He gives us true meaning and fulfillment in life!

This was an altar on which incense was burned as a pleasing aroma to God. Every morning and night, the high priest would burn a perpetual incense to God as intercession for His people (see Exod. 30:1–10).

The incense that went up to God speaks of the loveliness and perfection of Jesus, who is always pleasing to God. Today, because we are in Christ, God feels the same delight for us as He does for His Son (see 2 Cor. 2:15). Knowing that we are pleasing to God, we can come boldly to Him and be assured that He will hear our prayers!

The holy place of the tabernacle was structurally lined with golden boards. The boards were made of wood overlaid with gold and were fixed in silver sockets (see Exod. 26:15–30).

The golden boards symbolize us in Christ. In the Word of God, wood speaks of humanity, gold of righteousness, and silver of redemption. As believers, our human frailty is covered by Christ’s righteousness and we are rooted in the foundation of redemption! Although we fail and make mistakes, God still sees us righteous, redeemed, and extremely precious. Just like gold and silver.

On the table of showbread, the priests would place twelve fresh loaves of bread—representing the twelve tribes of Israel—before the Lord every Sabbath (see Lev. 24:5–9). The Lord commanded that the showbread be placed before Him “always” (see Exod. 25:30).

The table of showbread that is always before the Lord tells us that He desires to be with His people at all times! He delights in having us in His presence!

The bronze altar was placed in the outer court of the tabernacle. God’s people came to offer animal sacrifices for their sins on this altar (see Lev. 1:1–17).

In the Word of God, bronze represents judgment. So the bronze altar symbolizes the finished work of Jesus, who became the sacrifice for our sins and took all of God’s judgment for us. He bore every curse upon Himself—all condemnation, sickness, and poverty—so that today, we can have peace, health, and provision!

Turn to Jesus

and see your sorrow turn to joy
Have you been facing the same challenge for some time now? No matter how many different ways you look at it to try to find a solution, it stays unsolvable. No matter how much pressure you put on yourself to change your situation, it stays the same. The more you dwell on it, and how powerless you are to change things, the more demoralized and discouraged you get.

My friend, the Lord wants you to shift your focus. As long as your eyes are on your challenge, you’ll stay discouraged. As long as your eyes are on yourself and your inability to be strong enough, good enough, or smart enough to change the way things are, you’ll stay disheartened. Instead, turn your eyes upon Jesus. Just like the lamps on the menorah are turned to face the center shaft, Jesus invites you to turn to Him.

Do you know what happens when you turn to the Lord and fix your eyes on Him? The psalmist tells us, “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices” (Ps. 16:8–9 NIV). Beloved, when you look to Jesus, He reminds you that He’s right there with you in the midst of your struggle. He assures you that your help comes from Him and Him alone. And He causes new joy, hope, and faith to flood your heart!

So will you turn your eyes upon the Lord today? Let Him encourage you and assure you that He’s working in your life—even when it seems like nothing is happening. You can make the psalmist’s song your song too.

Fix your eyes on Jesus and His love for you in this powerful study of the biblical tabernacle.

Do you sometimes think twice before going to God in prayer? Especially on days you fail miserably. Days you wish you were a better spouse, a better parent, or a better employee. On days like these, do you feel like He’s less likely to hear your requests?

My friend, no matter how bad your day is, no matter how many mistakes you make, God will never reject you. In fact, He loves it when you come to Him. The Scriptures tell us that “we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ” (2 Cor. 2:15 NIV). Just like the altar of incense in the tabernacle, Christ is a sweet fragrance to God. And as believers, we are in Christ!

This means that even on days you feel like your life reeks of failure and inadequacy, you are still enveloped in Jesus’ pleasing aroma. You are wrapped in His loveliness and perfection. So when you come to God in prayer, He meets you with fondness and delight—ready to see to your needs and bless you!

Beloved, on your worst day, see yourself in Christ—accepted and pleasing to God—and come boldly before God knowing that He receives you with open arms. You can ask Him for all the help you need in your marriage, your parenting, your job, and any other area of your life. He will hear you because He takes joy in you!

See God’s desire for you to draw near to Him in this revelatory study of the biblical tabernacle.
